We decided that our first major project of the year will be a desktop CNC router. This choice is not only driven by the immense value of adding such a powerful tool to our lab but also by a gap we’ve identified in the market. There are very few open-source, high-performance desktop CNC routers available in the $1000–$1500 price range with reasonable specifications. Our goal is to build a CNC router that is completely open-source, small size, and powerful enough to handle all hobby-grade tasks—all while maintaining an affordable price point. It needs to at least be able to cut aluminum, plastic, foam, polycarbonic, and wood.
